Festival in general, add color and joy to our life and break the monotony of our humdrum life accompanied with tensions and ceaseless toils of day to day existence. Some festivals are related to seasons of nature while others are related to some sort of religion.

Baisakhi is one such festival which has both religious and agricultural significance. Baisakhi is chiefly the harvest festival of Punjab. It is celebrated to mark the arrival of the harvest season. Based on Indian solar calendar, it is celebrated on April 13 every year. Although, it is known as harvest festival it holds a special place in the heart of all the Sikh people due to the fact that this date commemorates the formation of the ‘Khalsa Panth’ of warriors under Guru Gobind Singh in 1699. Also, Baisakhi marks the start of Khalsa in 1699 by Guru Gobind Singh. On this day Gurudwaras are decorated and hold kirtans. There is also an incident which happened on this same day of Baisakhi and left a mark on the pages of history for ever. That incident is popularly known as Jalliah Wala Bagh Massacre. People were open fired in the garden by General Dyer in the excuse of breaking of martial law. The innocent people who came there to celebrate Baisakhi were also killed mercilessly. So on this day we pay our tribute to the martyr.

So dear students, I would like to conclude that our heart must fill with immense joy and pride while celebrating our festivals as these are the markings of the rich cultural heritage of India.
